May 22, 1859: It's Elementary, My Dear Reader: Arthur Conan Doyle is born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He?ll go on to create the most famous detective in fiction: Sherlock Holmes.

Conan Doyle also popularized the archenemy dynamic in the form of evil Professor Moriarity — half of the key duality of every pulp novel and comic book ever written. And by killing off Holmes, with whom he had grown weary, Conan Doyle introduced the questionable literary device of resurrecting from the dead a popular character after fans roundly object to his untimely demise. It isn’t much of a slippery slide from Reichenbach Falls to Bobby Ewing’s death just being a bad dream, erasing an entire season of Dallas.

When Hef founded it in 1953, men’s magazines contained grainy black and white pictures of semi-naked strippers and articles in which men conquered wild animals and bad guys. Sex was shameful. The word smut comes to mind. But Hef, who had grown up on the west side of Chicago in the 1920s and 30s, pursued a different vision. Having graduated from the University of Illinois and worked at magazines, including Esquire (then still in Chicago), he imagined a lifestyle monthly which would attract urban men with a mix of nice clothes, nice cars, culture, and colour photographs of the girl next door, naked.

In the United States, the eclipse begins around 5:30 p.m. PDT. For the next two hours, a Moon-shaped portion of the sun will go into hiding. Greatest coverage occurs around 6:30 p.m. PDT. The partial eclipse ends just before 7:30 p.m. >>> Animated Map | Share Your Photos

Because some of the sun is always exposed during the eclipse, ambient daylight won't seem much different than usual.

Instead, the event will reveal itself in the shadows. Look on the ground beneath leafy trees for crescent-shaped sunbeams and rings of light.

Near the center-line of the eclipse, observers will experience something special: the "ring of fire." As the Moon crosses the sun dead-center, a circular strip or annulus of sunlight will completely surround the dark lunar disk. Visually, the sun has a big black hole in the middle.

The "path of annularity" where this occurs is only about 200 miles wide, but it stretches almost halfway around the world passing many population centers en route: Tokyo, Japan; Medford, Oregon; Chico, California; Reno, Nevada; Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Lubbock, Texas.

In those locations the ring of fire phenomenon will be visible for as much as 4 and a half minutes.

But first, heads talk: Nicolas Cage, Drive Angry blond, possibly wearing the Eye of Agamotto around his neck, calling Stan a giant. Jon Favreau, who directed Stan in Iron Man, and Kevin Smith, who gave him lines to say about Ben Grimm's wiener in Mallrats. Patrick Stewart with a mustache, looking like Patrick Stewart trying to buy pornography circumspectly. Then quick cuts of other luminaries delivering Stan-related sound bites in what looks like repurposed junket footage: Franco! Ringo! Paris! Chiklis! Brett Ratner! Most of these people are making their first and last appearances in the movie, although Chiklis (who was in The Fantastic Four) and Ratner (who has many gay friends) pop up later.

Stan decides to use "Stan Lee" for his comics work, saving "Stanley Martin Lieber" in a drawer for the Great American Novel he'd never write. Simon and Kirby defect to National Comics, which would eventually become DC, and Goodman installs Stan as Timely's editor, art director, and head writer until someone with actual experience can be found to fill the post. Then the United States enters World War II and Stan joins the Army; he's one of nine men whose official classification is listed as "playwright," along with William Saroyan, Dr. Seuss, and Frank Capra. He illustrates pamphlets about how to avoid catching venereal disease.

We hear about Stan's emergence as a big draw on the college-lecture circuit, as kids who'd grown up on early Marvel and gone on to postsecondary education filled halls to hear him do 20 minutes of patter followed by an endless gulping Q&A. Stan admits he always looked at it as market research; he'd come away from the Q&As with a better understanding of what his audience was responding to. Philosophy majors loved the Silver Surfer, forever wandering the lonely spaceways agonizing over man's inhumanity to man. The college gigs were smart branding. Having sold Marvel's comics to children, he then sold them to college kids, then took the idea that college kids were into them and sold it to the world at large as proof that what he did wasn't junk, that comics could punch their weight alongside literature and cinema and modern art and rock and roll. That they might even have something to offer adults. He wasn't the only person who believed this back then (and he may not have believed it at all). But at the time, as spokesman for Marvel and therefore for comics in general, he was basically the only one saying it, with a convivial grin, to Dick Cavett and Rolling Stone and the Washington Post. This is no small legacy.

Beyond Smart TV: 'Surfaces' Prototype Reveals the Television of Tomorrow | Gadget Lab | Wired.com: “In a few years’ time, you’ll be able to buy a TV that covers an entire wall, acting like wallpaper,” NDS chief marketing officer Nigel Smith told Wired. In this way, the TV could take the form of a gigantic canvas, providing layers of additional information, as well as different levels of immersion.

Because wall-sized TVs are hard to come by, NDS created a $30,000 setup comprised of six LCDs arranged in a rectangular array. The onscreen system is coded in HTML5 and runs on Chrome. A second screen experience, also coded in HTML5, provides remote control functionality in the browser of an iPad.

At first glance, the system is almost overwhelming. For the NDS demo, you walk into a room to find a large display seamlessly integrated with the wall. When it’s not in use, the image on the display matches the design of the surrounding wall. (In a real-life implementation, this would appear in a low-power state reminiscent of e-ink.) Turn on the TV, and you can control not only what you’re watching, but also the precise size and location of your main video window, as well as other information streams that appear on the wall.

If you’re not familiar with Gantt charts or need a free way to build one I suggest you check them out. Briefly, a Gantt chart lets you build a complete set of tasks, the dependencies between the tasks (which tasks have to be done before, after or during another task), duration of tasks, and what resources (usually people) are assigned that task. Interesting story: my day job involves space exploration. I’ve been told by several people that were there that Werhner Von Braun, the rocket pioneer that oversaw development of the Saturn V, which took us to the moon, kept a massive Gantt chart outside his office. It covered several walls from top to bottom and had a couple people whose jobs were to keep it up to date. Von Braun could look at the chart and determine the current critical path, that sequence of tasks that at that point in the program was driving the Saturn V delivery date. He would use the chart to know which of his departments he needed to assist, cajole or otherwise push to accelerate the schedule.

The short black-and-white film is set to a World War II theme and features a brief appearance by Steve Jobs in the role of U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Entitled "1944," the almost 9-minute full version was Apple's in-house takeoff on "1984," the iconic first Macintosh TV ad that caused a sensation during that year's Super Bowl. Set as a World War II tale of good vs. IBM, it is a broadcast-quality production (said to have cost $50,000) that was designed to fire up Apple's international sales force at a 1984 meeting in Hawaii. A copy of "1944" was provided to me by one-time Apple employee Craig Elliott, now CEO of Pertino Networks, a cloud-computing startup located two blocks from Apple in Cupertino.

Jobs' appearance, complete with fake accent to initially disguise his true identity, comes at roughly 5:20 into the film.
