Next week's solar transit of Venus the last until 2117

Next week's solar transit of Venus the last until 2117: June 5 and 6 will be the last opportunity this century to see the planet Venus as a little black dot moving across the solar disc -- a rare event with a long, important history in astronomy.

I'm primarily interested in this because of the book Gordon Durand gave me, Mason & Dixon by Thomas Pynchon, where the Transit of Venus is a major plot point. Thanks, Gordon, I wasn't sure, but it turned out I liked that book very much, once I learned to catch on to the jokes. ;)

Google's World Wonders Project brings ancient, modern sites online | Macworld

Google's World Wonders Project brings ancient, modern sites online | Macworld: While many of us can't hop on plane to visit those places, thanks to Google's new World Wonders Project they’re just a mouse click away.

The project allows you to virtually tour 132 historic sites in 18 countries. Sites include Stonehenge, Pompei, Shark Bay in Australia, Yosemite National Park and the palace at Versailles.

From the World Wonders home page, you can choose a virtual tour by location or by theme.

Once you arrive at a site, you can immerse yourself in it. You can "walk" around using Google's Street View technology. Since automobiles weren't allowed in some of the sites in World Wonders, Google had to use cameras mounted on tricycles to create street views of the locales, the company explained in a blog.

Manually configuring an iCloud email account | Macworld

Manually configuring an iCloud email account | Macworld: Some people have had some difficulty making older MobileMe accounts work with iCloud. And yet when they try to manually set up such an account, they’re thwarted because there doesn’t appear to be a way to fiddle with iCloud’s IMAP and SMTP settings. But you can if you know the secret.

And here’s that secret. While in Mail’s Accounts setting, click on the Plus button and enter your iCloud address and password as you normally would. The button at the bottom will read Create. Hold down the Option key and that button changes to read Continue. Click on Continue. Instead of your account being set up for you, you can now set it up manually.

Lodgit Desk 1.9.8 - Booking software for small to medium-sized hotels.. (Commercial)

Lodgit Desk 1.9.8 - Booking software for small to medium-sized hotels.. (Commercial): Lodgit Desk is a modern booking software that is suitable especially for small or middle-sized lodging establishments. The integrated SQL database allows for any number of rentable units in different objects to be managed.
Lodgit Desk makes managing accommodations in hotels, guesthouses, holiday apartments, camp ground or youth hostels a lot easier. Using the graphical reservation schedule, you can reserve and book accommodations directly, manage the units and guests, write and print invoices as well as set up a differentiated price system for the future.

Within the guest management, you can set up groups and attach notes to a guest profile.

With Lodgit Desk, correspondence with the guest (offers, confirmations, invoices, mails) can be handled in different languages.

Services and items that will be billed separately to the accommodation can be created as extras and added to bookings when necessary.

Extra items that are added often, such as breakfast, half-board etc. can be linked as a package to a unit, so that they will automatically be added whenever a new booking is added.

Classical music downloads spearhead changes in digital music pricing - TechHive Beta Blog

Classical music downloads spearhead changes in digital music pricing - TechHive Beta Blog: A new recording of Beethoven’s piano sonatas released on Tuesday stands out for a few reasons. First, the young Korean pianist HJ Lim, who burst onto the classical music scene in 2009, has begun her recording career with a complete set of piano sonatas that most performers only approach later in their careers. (It’s not entirely complete, but almost; see my review of the set.) Second, this pianist takes a unique approach to Beethoven’s music, with tempi that are much faster than usual.

But perhaps the bigger news is the price: for a limited time, EMI is selling this 8-CD Beethoven: Complete Piano Sonatas set exclusively on the iTunes Store for the bargain price of only $10. With the same set due to be released on CD this week at more than $90, EMI’s slashing the download price suggests an interesting strategy, but also points out how flexible the price of music downloads can be.

Can Science Explain Why We Tell Stories? : The New Yorker: The interesting questions about stories, which have, as they say, excited the interests of readers for millennia, are not about what makes a taste for them “universal,” but what makes the good ones so different from the dull ones, and whether the good ones really make us better people, or just make us people who happen to have heard a good story.

May 22, 1859: It's Elementary, My Dear Reader

May 22, 1859: It's Elementary, My Dear Reader: Arthur Conan Doyle is born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He?ll go on to create the most famous detective in fiction: Sherlock Holmes.

Conan Doyle also popularized the archenemy dynamic in the form of evil Professor Moriarity — half of the key duality of every pulp novel and comic book ever written. And by killing off Holmes, with whom he had grown weary, Conan Doyle introduced the questionable literary device of resurrecting from the dead a popular character after fans roundly object to his untimely demise. It isn’t much of a slippery slide from Reichenbach Falls to Bobby Ewing’s death just being a bad dream, erasing an entire season of Dallas.

Playboy goes west

Playboy goes west: There is nothing like Playboy and there never will be again. When Hef founded it in 1953, men’s magazines contained grainy black and white pictures of semi-naked strippers and articles in which men conquered wild animals and bad guys. Sex was shameful. The word smut comes to mind. But Hef, who had grown up on the west side of Chicago in the 1920s and 30s, pursued a different vision. Having graduated from the University of Illinois and worked at magazines, including Esquire (then still in Chicago), he imagined a lifestyle monthly which would attract urban men with a mix of nice clothes, nice cars, culture, and colour photographs of the girl next door, naked.

Sex and the Automobile in the Jazz Age | History Today

Sex and the Automobile in the Jazz Age | History Today: 'Brothels on wheels' thundered the moralists but Peter Ling argues the advent of mass motoring in the 1920s was only one of the changes in social and group relationships that made easier the pursuit of carnal desire.

Thanks to the richness of the new recording media of film, phonograph, and glossy magazine, the imagery of the 1920s remains deeply etched on the popular memory. Like the 1960s, the 1920s are remembered as 'teenage' years in which an older generation said: 'Thou shalt not' and youth replied: 'I will!' Youth itself was one essential element in the iconography of the decade. When not dancing or kissing, the carefree flapper and her boyfriend were commonly depicted seated in an automobile, for the motor car was another key symbol of the so-called 'Jazz Age'.

Cell Doors 'Incapable of Locking' at Giant Afghan Jail

Cell Doors 'Incapable of Locking' at Giant Afghan Jail: The detention facility that the U.S. built in Afghanistan is state-of-the-art. Except for all the faulty hinges on the cell doors. Or the locks that are, in the words of a new report from the Defense Department's inspector general, "incapable of locking either manually or electronically." Or the construction that's deemed "not up to the standard suitable for a detention facility." The worst part? U.S. military commanders have known about these flaws since the prison opened its doors.

Then the twist: Willard reveals that both the cinematic scene and the following tech demo haven’t been running off a game file but in real time from within UE4′s game editor. It’s like finding out that the actors on TV are actually tiny people living inside your set. It also helps him show that changes can be made to the game’s design and code, recompiled and executed nearly instantly—a technical feat that has been simply unheard-of in game development. And just like that, the silence in the room becomes reverent. The videogame industry has changed.

Solar eclipse Sunday visible from Oregon

Solar eclipse Sunday visible from Oregon:

Something strange is about to happen to the shadows beneath your feet.

In the United States, the eclipse begins around 5:30 p.m. PDT. For the next two hours, a Moon-shaped portion of the sun will go into hiding. Greatest coverage occurs around 6:30 p.m. PDT. The partial eclipse ends just before 7:30 p.m. >>> Animated Map | Share Your Photos

Because some of the sun is always exposed during the eclipse, ambient daylight won't seem much different than usual.

Instead, the event will reveal itself in the shadows. Look on the ground beneath leafy trees for crescent-shaped sunbeams and rings of light.

Near the center-line of the eclipse, observers will experience something special: the "ring of fire." As the Moon crosses the sun dead-center, a circular strip or annulus of sunlight will completely surround the dark lunar disk. Visually, the sun has a big black hole in the middle.

The "path of annularity" where this occurs is only about 200 miles wide, but it stretches almost halfway around the world passing many population centers en route: Tokyo, Japan; Medford, Oregon; Chico, California; Reno, Nevada; Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Lubbock, Texas.

In those locations the ring of fire phenomenon will be visible for as much as 4 and a half minutes.

Jon Favreau, who directed Stan in Iron Man, and Kevin Smith, who gave him lines to say about Ben Grimm's wiener in Mallrats. Patrick Stewart with a mustache, looking like Patrick Stewart trying to buy pornography circumspectly. Then quick cuts of other luminaries delivering Stan-related sound bites in what looks like repurposed junket footage: Franco! Ringo! Paris! Chiklis! Brett Ratner! Most of these people are making their first and last appearances in the movie, although Chiklis (who was in The Fantastic Four) and Ratner (who has many gay friends) pop up later.

Stan decides to use "Stan Lee" for his comics work, saving "Stanley Martin Lieber" in a drawer for the Great American Novel he'd never write. Simon and Kirby defect to National Comics, which would eventually become DC, and Goodman installs Stan as Timely's editor, art director, and head writer until someone with actual experience can be found to fill the post. Then the United States enters World War II and Stan joins the Army; he's one of nine men whose official classification is listed as "playwright," along with William Saroyan, Dr. Seuss, and Frank Capra. He illustrates pamphlets about how to avoid catching venereal disease.

We hear about Stan's emergence as a big draw on the college-lecture circuit, as kids who'd grown up on early Marvel and gone on to postsecondary education filled halls to hear him do 20 minutes of patter followed by an endless gulping Q&A. Stan admits he always looked at it as market research; he'd come away from the Q&As with a better understanding of what his audience was responding to. Philosophy majors loved the Silver Surfer, forever wandering the lonely spaceways agonizing over man's inhumanity to man. The college gigs were smart branding. Having sold Marvel's comics to children, he then sold them to college kids, then took the idea that college kids were into them and sold it to the world at large as proof that what he did wasn't junk, that comics could punch their weight alongside literature and cinema and modern art and rock and roll. That they might even have something to offer adults. He wasn't the only person who believed this back then (and he may not have believed it at all). But at the time, as spokesman for Marvel and therefore for comics in general, he was basically the only one saying it, with a convivial grin, to Dick Cavett and Rolling Stone and the Washington Post. This is no small legacy.

Rather than squirting out ink, this printer builds up objects by squeezing out a 0.33-mm-thick thread of molten ABS plastic. Why Evernote might be the future of Mac apps – MacDailyNews - Welcome Home: “One of my all time favorite apps is Evernote. It’s not that it does so much,” Ron McElfresh writes for NoodleMac. “I like using Evernote because it’s everywhere all at the same time.”
“Think of Evernote as a mini word processor for the Mac. Drop in graphics, photos, text, clips, even PDFs. Everything is searchable. Not bad for free, right?” McElfresh writes. “Here’s the big surprise. Evernote syncs your data– notes, images, clips, text, photos, PDFs, whatever– to the cloud.”

McElfresh writes, “How does Evernote exemplify apps of the future? First, it’s free. Second, it syncs data with all your devices. Third, it does more.”

Beyond Smart TV: 'Surfaces' Prototype Reveals the Television of Tomorrow | Gadget Lab | Wired.com

Beyond Smart TV: 'Surfaces' Prototype Reveals the Television of Tomorrow | Gadget Lab | Wired.com: “In a few years’ time, you’ll be able to buy a TV that covers an entire wall, acting like wallpaper,” NDS chief marketing officer Nigel Smith told Wired. In this way, the TV could take the form of a gigantic canvas, providing layers of additional information, as well as different levels of immersion.

Because wall-sized TVs are hard to come by, NDS created a $30,000 setup comprised of six LCDs arranged in a rectangular array. The onscreen system is coded in HTML5 and runs on Chrome. A second screen experience, also coded in HTML5, provides remote control functionality in the browser of an iPad.

At first glance, the system is almost overwhelming. For the NDS demo, you walk into a room to find a large display seamlessly integrated with the wall. When it’s not in use, the image on the display matches the design of the surrounding wall. (In a real-life implementation, this would appear in a low-power state reminiscent of e-ink.) Turn on the TV, and you can control not only what you’re watching, but also the precise size and location of your main video window, as well as other information streams that appear on the wall.

A Start Up Trek - Strategery | GeekDad | Wired.com

A Start Up Trek - Strategery | GeekDad | Wired.com: A friend of mine introduced me to gantter.com for one of my day job projects. If you’re not familiar with Gantt charts or need a free way to build one I suggest you check them out. Briefly, a Gantt chart lets you build a complete set of tasks, the dependencies between the tasks (which tasks have to be done before, after or during another task), duration of tasks, and what resources (usually people) are assigned that task. Interesting story: my day job involves space exploration. I’ve been told by several people that were there that Werhner Von Braun, the rocket pioneer that oversaw development of the Saturn V, which took us to the moon, kept a massive Gantt chart outside his office. It covered several walls from top to bottom and had a couple people whose jobs were to keep it up to date. Von Braun could look at the chart and determine the current critical path, that sequence of tasks that at that point in the program was driving the Saturn V delivery date. He would use the chart to know which of his departments he needed to assist, cajole or otherwise push to accelerate the schedule.

The Wilson Quarterly: The Call of the Future by Tom Vanderbilt

The Wilson Quarterly: The Call of the Future by Tom Vanderbilt: In 2009, the United States crossed a digital Rubicon: For the first time, the amount of data sent with mobile devices exceeded the sum of transmitted voice data. The shift was heralded in tech circles with prophetic fury: “The phone call is dead,” pronounced a blogger at the Web site TechCrunch. Writing in Wired, journalist Clive Thompson observed, “This generation doesn’t make phone calls, because everyone is in constant, lightweight contact in so many other ways: texting, chatting, and social network messaging.” And the online news network True/Slant declared a paradox: “We’re well on our way to becoming an incredibly disconnected connected society.”

When it is introduced, a new technology typically sets in motion a now familiar script. At first, the technology is deemed to have little import or to fulfill only very specific, limited uses. Consider, for example, this casual dismissal by TheNew York Times in 1939: “The problem with television is that people must sit and keep their eyes glued on a screen; the average American family hasn’t time for it.”
