Half a Million DVDs of Data Stored in Gram of DNA

Half a Million DVDs of Data Stored in Gram of DNA: Paleontologists routinely resurrect and sequence DNA from woolly mammoths and other long-extinct species. Future paleontologists, or librarians, may do much the same to pull up Shakespeare's sonnets, listen to Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream" speech, or view photos. Researchers in the United Kingdom report today that they've encoded these works and others in DNA and later sequenced the genetic material to reconstruct the written, audio, and visual information.

How to sign digital documents

How to sign digital documents: I’ve received some electronic documents that I’m supposed to sign. I could print and sign them and mail them back, but I’ve heard there’s a way to sign them right on my Mac. Do you know how it’s done?

You have a couple of options. If you’re running Mac OS X Lion or later, you can take advantage of Preview’s Signature feature. Alternatively, you can use Adobe’s Acrobat Reader. We'll start with Preview.

A Signature Capture window will appear and your Mac’s camera will light up. Scrawl out your John Hancock on a piece of paper and place that paper before the camera so that the signature aligns with the blue line in the viewer area. Signature Capture will grab your signature and display it to the right of the viewer. Click the Accept button and the signature will be added to Preview’s list of available signatures.

Apps we can't live without: DragThing | Macworld: I’m so accustomed to having DragThing on my Macs that I forget that it’s not part of the OS. 30 years of the Apple Lisa and the Apple IIe

30 years of the Apple Lisa and the Apple IIe: Despite those drawbacks, the Lisa made a huge splash in the industry in 1983 thanks to a bitmapped graphical operating system that utilized icons, pull-down menus, and overlapping windows to represent and manipulate information instead of the then-familiar convention of typing text-based commands. Happy 10th birthday Safari! Thanks for changing everything – MacDailyNews - Welcome Home: “Who are all these WebKit users? To start with, they’re the hundreds of millions of people using iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads. Need hundreds of millions more?” Duncan writes. “WebKit is also at the heart of Android. Since the first devices went on sale in 2008, the Android browser has been based on WebKit. As of BlackBerry 6, the Playbook and BlackBerry smartphones use WebKit; so does Samsung’s bada mobile operating system, Amazon’s cloud-assisted Silk browser for Kindle Fire tablets, and even the experimental browser Amazon puts in recent Kindle ereaders. Browse the Web on a Nintendo 3DS? It uses WebKit. The upcoming Tizen mobile OS is making a bet like webOS: Tizen is Linux under the hood, but the interface is powered by WebKit.”

Cord-cutting's moment is now, and Apple is missing it

Cord-cutting's moment is now, and Apple is missing it: On this visit, however, his cable box was gone: It had been replaced by a Roku, and the cable service replaced by subscriptions to Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Prime. That works out to a savings of at least $30 a month—well worth it, my father-in-law says, even though he can’t watch CBS shows or live golf anymore. Instead, he’s been exploring the Criterion Collection on Hulu Plus.

“The quality is as good as cable and satellite and in some programming areas better,” he told me last week. He gushed: “Hulu Criterion is a treasure vault.”

Qualcomm Pulls Out all the Stops in 'Born Mobile' Keynote | Gadget Lab | Wired.com

Qualcomm Pulls Out all the Stops in 'Born Mobile' Keynote | Gadget Lab | Wired.com: The headline technology announcement was the company’s new quadcore Snapdragon 800 series of processors. They provide super speedy (up to 150Mb per second) download speeds over LTE Advanced, and 802.11AC Wi-Fi allows for improved connectivity at home or in the office. It supports CPU speeds of up to 2.3GHz per core. It’s so powerful, you can view Ultra HD (4k) video and capture it on your mobile device. And it consumes half the power of its predecessor. That’s important, as our unquenchable data thirst (Qualcomm is expecting a 1,000x increase in network data usage in the next decade) puts a huge strain on device batteries.
