Rape video game hits the Web

Rape video game hits the Web: "

The video game RapeLay is exactly what it sounds like. It's a game that allows one to simulate the experience of boarding a train, groping a schoolgirl, and subsequently raping her, her mother, and her sister, hearing them utter dialogue along the lines of 'I w-w-want to die,' and gradually converting them into compliant women who enjoy sex with you, while taking post-rape pictures of them and making them get abortions so that you do not die. (The moral of this story would seem to be that rape is fun and games, but fatherhood is a killer.) It has been, for the past four years, a perennial feminist concern.

Roseburg bar to become gentlemen's club | The News-Review - NRtoday.com

Roseburg bar to become gentlemen's club | The News-Review - NRtoday.com: "For the last six weeks, the owners and employees of Yogee's bar have been going through a reluctant change, adding a coat of paint, new seating, lighting and a stage to the back section of the establishment on Cass Avenue in Roseburg.

Business has slowed recently, forcing the owners to update their business after 11 years in operation.

Their only move, owners and brothers Toby and Robert Faas decided, was to turn half the bar into a gentlemen's club featuring topless exotic dancers.

“This isn't really what we wanted to do,” Toby Faas said. “We tried to become a family friendly establishment, alcohol-free on half of the building, so that families could come in. Five months, three proposals and countless phone calls trying to work it out — we got told no by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission.”

The bar would have to remove its games and pool tables to satisfy state liquor laws in order to allow minors, Faas said, but without the games, they didn't see a way to attract minors to the establishment.

“Our goal was to increase the non-alchohol sales ... we were setting it up as a community-friendly establishment and apparently the laws aren't written that way. The only other way we could go was this way,” Faas said, gesturing to the pole and newly constructed stage.

Dave Spani, liquor inspector for OLCC, said that when a bar is licensed, it may provide any entertainment it chooses and called showcasing exotic dancers a “constitutionally protected activity.”

March 25, 1995: First Wiki Makes Fast Work of Collaboration | This Day In Tech | Wired.com

March 25, 1995: First Wiki Makes Fast Work of Collaboration | This Day In Tech | Wired.com: "But the wiki’s beginnings were humble: Like many things internet-related, the first was a practical application by one person trying to solve his own work-related problem. In this case, that person was Ward Cunningham, and the problem was how to better collaborate with a bunch of other programmers.

On this day in 1995, Cunningham installed the WikiWikiWeb on a $300 computer someone gave him and connected it to the mostly barren landscape that was then the internet, using a 14.4-baud dial-up modem.

While the rules to live by are obvious, Cunningham himself has a few, which he still maintains on his WikiWikiWeb pages. They include:

- Write only factual information.
- Give concrete advice, rather than abstract.
- Respect the freedom you have been given.
- Be concise and stay on topic for the page.
- Use language you’d be comfortable reading out loud — “use” versus “utilize” — and keep it simple. Simple language often communicates better.
- Check for spelling and grammar errors — errors detract from the content.<
- Edit only when you think a page is lacking -- don't just sign your name at the bottom of every page.
- Delete only if doing so adds value.<
- Don't say things that are likely to make others mad. Practice civility and understatement.
- Above all, be good, and play nice!

Funny how these principles apply to so many things.

Bowers & Wilkins P5 Headphones | Wired.com Product Reviews

Bowers & Wilkins P5 Headphones | Wired.com Product Reviews: "That said, we suggest you skip meals for a couple weeks and divert the money you would've spent eating on a pair of Bowers & Wilkins P5s.

These are the first headphones Bowers & Wilkins has ever sold, and it's clear from the moment you remove them from their suede-lined, quilted-nylon pouch that England's audio alchemists are interested in sending a message: 'We are not screwing around.'

And, oh yeah, the sound.

There is a technical term for this level of audio performance: DOPE. You don't expect bass from a company that recommends you download lossless versions of Peter Gabriel and the Creole Choir of Cuba from its website, but hook the P5s up to some nasty hip hop and their 40mm Mylar drivers will rattle the gold off your grille. Hook up something sweeter, and the phones will tug at the heart you never thought you had with their dulcet high notes and cut-crystal midrange.

How the Tablet Will Change the World | Magazine

How the Tablet Will Change the World | Magazine:

Yes, the iPad is designed for reading, gaming, and media consumption. But it also represents an ambitious rethinking of how we use computers.

No more files and folders, physical keyboards and mouses. Instead, the iPad offers a streamlined yet powerful intuitive experience that’s psychically in tune with our mobile, attention-challenged, super-connected new century.

Instant-on power. Lightning-fast multitouch response. Native applications downloaded from a single source that simplifies purchases, organizes updates, and ensures security.

In some ways, Chrome is even more radical than the iPad. Spawn of a pure Internet company, it is itself pure Internet.

While Apple wants to move computing to a curated environment where everything adheres to a carefully honed interface, Google believes that the operating system should be nearly invisible.

Good-bye to files, client apps, and onboard storage — Chrome OS channels users directly into the cloud, with the confidence that the Web will soon provide everything from native-quality applications to printer drivers.

Book Review: Appetite for America by Stephen Fried - WSJ.com

Book Review: Appetite for America by Stephen Fried - WSJ.com: "In many of the dusty railroad towns out West in the late 1880s and early decades of the 1900s, there was only one place to get a decent meal, one place to take the family for a celebration, one place to eat when the train stopped to load and unload: a Fred Harvey restaurant. And the owner's decision to import an all-female waitstaff meant that his restaurants offered up one more important and hard-to-find commodity in cowboy country: wives.

It was a brilliant formula, and for a long time Fred Harvey's name was synonymous in America with good food, efficient service and young women. Today, though, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone aware of the prominent role Harvey played in civilizing the West and raising America's dining standards. His is one of those household names now stashed somewhere up in the attic.

Humans Could Regenerate Tissue Like Newts By Switching Off a Single Gene | Popular Science

Humans Could Regenerate Tissue Like Newts By Switching Off a Single Gene | Popular Science: "Scientists have long been stymied by human regenerative healing -- that is, wholesale regrowth of, say, a severed limb -- an ability inherent in some species but lost on humans. But new research suggests the ability to regenerate isn't based on something newts and flatworms have that we don't; rather, it's something we do have that's keeping us from regenerating tissues. Researchers think a gene called p21 may control regenerative healing, and that by switching it off, humans could perform our own regeneration.

The new research suggests that the potential to heal without scarring -- or possibly even to regrow a limb, albeit in a limited manner -- may lie dormant in human cells, kept in check by the p21 gene. A group of lab mice engineered to lack p21 were able to regenerate surgically removed tissue to the point that no evidence of the surgery remained. Holes punched in their ears -- a standard procedure for tagging lab animals -- also healed perfectly, leaving behind no traces of scar tissue or previous damage.

Tiger Woods Announces Return To Sex | The Onion - America's Finest News Source: "PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL—In an announcement highly anticipated by sex fans around the world, Tiger Woods told a small gathering of reporters, family, and lovers Friday that the most dominant fornicator on the planet would soon return to sex.

'Not being able to get out there and have sex has really been tough on me,' Woods said. 'I've missed it. I love fucking with all my heart.'

Woods said that during his brief time away from sex, he couldn't stop thinking about one day resuming his daily regimen of sexual intercourse with random women who look vaguely like his wife, only skankier.

'When I am out there having sex, I am in complete control,' said Woods, an acknowledged master of the long game who claims he is only truly at peace when he is between the legs of a woman. 'It's just me and my thoughts. And a high-end escort. And the lounge dancer. And sometimes [caddie] Stevie. And probably some stewardess I just met.'

'I'm so into it that I usually just block out all the cameras,' Woods added.
