The Puns and Detritus in James Joyce’s “Ulysses” : The New Yorker

The Puns and Detritus in James Joyce’s “Ulysses” : The New Yorker: They walked to Ringsend, on the south bank of the Liffey, where (and here we can drop the Dante analogy) she put her hand inside his trousers and masturbated him. It was June 16, 1904, the day on which Joyce set “Ulysses.” When people celebrate Bloomsday, that is what they are celebrating.

Joyce had known only prostitutes and proper middle-class girls. Nora was something new, an ordinary woman who treated him as an ordinary man. The moral simplicity of what happened between them seems to have stunned him. It was elemental, a gratuitous act of loving that had not involved flattery or deceit, and that was unaccompanied by shame or guilt. That simplicity became the basis of their relationship.

Why did Apple lock in Liquidmetal for two more years?

Why did Apple lock in Liquidmetal for two more years?: Arora writes, “Liquidmetal alloys are made of a mix of titanium, nickel, copper and zirconium, among other metals. These materials feel as smooth as liquid or glass when touched; hence the name Liquidmetal. These materials offer high tensile strength, excellent resistance to corrosion, and strong resistance to scratches. These materials can be easily cast and molded using heat similar to thermoplastics. Apple has an exclusive agreement to use Liquidmetal technology in consumer electronics.”

Small Town Cops Pile Up On Useless Military Gear

Small Town Cops Pile Up On Useless Military Gear: Small police departments across America are using a little-known Pentagon program to amass battlefield-grade arsenals. Which means billions of dollars' worth of U.S. military gear are in the hands of small-town cops who neither need the equipment nor are properly trained to use it, critics charge. At best, it's a waste of resources (since the milgear still has to be maintained). At worst, it could cost lives.

Greatest Comic of All Time | Daredevil #220 | Robot 6 @ Comic Book Resources – Covering Comic Book News and Entertainment

Greatest Comic of All Time | Daredevil #220 | Robot 6 @ Comic Book Resources – Covering Comic Book News and Entertainment: Why it’s the greatest comic of all time: Historical importance aside, this is just a fantastically put-together comic book, a great example of how work done in the assembly line process of work-for-hire comics can occasionally become more than the sum of its parts.  The big draw is Mazzucchelli’s art, about which the editor of a major superhero website remarked “I can’t believe this is in a Marvel comic” when I showed it to him.  Indeed.  What makes the best of Mazzucchelli’s pre-alt-comics work so special is how convincingly he was able to pull off the meat and potatoes of superhero action without ever resorting to the lexicon of stock poses, angles, and compositions laid down by Jack Kirby and company in the mid-20th century.  Instead, Mazzucchelli’s best pre-Born Again work looks something like action comics by an artist who combines the best of Bernard Krigstein, Raymond Pettibon and Edward Hopper.  The slashing, immensely bold brushwork gives straightforward shots of hands and faces the visual might of a great punching panel, and when the punches do start flying his emphasis on figure drawing and realist gesture sells the bones they jar and the blood they draw much better than the kind of amplified blocking this comic makes a point of avoiding would.  The approach to violence on display in this issue’s panels is almost a matter-of-fact one, far removed indeed from the balletic fury most comics about fighting strive for.  Mazzucchelli saves the high drama for ink-splattered panels of ran falling, buildings jutting into clouded skies, fog turning a city into a collection of grainy gray rectangles.

Pankaj Mishra reviews ‘Patriot of Persia’ by Christopher de Bellaigue · LRB 21 June 2012: In 1872, with the country starved of capital and suffering from a massive budget deficit, he had granted a monopoly in the construction of railways, roads, factories, dams and mines to another British citizen, Baron Reuter (founder of the news agency). Even Lord Curzon was appalled twenty years later when he was told the terms, describing it as ‘the most complete surrender of the entire resources of a kingdom into foreign hands that has ever been dreamed of much less accomplished in history’.

Start Your Engines — Slot Car Racing Is Back!

Start Your Engines — Slot Car Racing Is Back!: Invented in 1912, the small-scale, obsessive sport of slot car racing has seen its ups and downs over the last hundred years. The hobby, in which motorized model cars speed around a slotted track, enjoyed its height of popularity after World War II, then sputtered in the '70s with the introduction of Pong and other videogames. The public arcades where hobbyists could race have largely been wiped off the map, but an estimated three million slot car enthusiasts still rev their tiny engines in basements and garages.

Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - See everything the new OS X can do.

Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - See everything the new OS X can do.: These are the 2 most killer new features of Mountain Lion - AirPlay Mirroring and Dictation.

AirPlay Mirroring

Wireless mirroring
Send what’s on your Mac screen to an HDTV wirelessly with Apple TV. Mirroring is great for classrooms, conference rooms, and your living room.

High definition
AirPlay Mirroring sends a video stream automatically optimized for the HD capabilities of your Mac and Apple TV. It supports up to 1080p HD.

Automatic detection
When a Mac with Mountain Lion detects an Apple TV on the same network, the AirPlay Mirroring menu item appears in the menu bar.

Menu item
To wirelessly mirror your Mac to your HDTV, click the AirPlay Mirroring menu item and choose your Apple TV. Use the menu to select a different Apple TV on your network and set resolution matching.

Resolution matching
AirPlay Mirroring scales the contents of your Mac desktop to fit on your HDTV. For a sharper image, choose to set the resolution of your desktop to best match that of your Apple TV.

Seamless integration with iTunes
When you play movies or TV shows with iTunes on your Mac, AirPlay Mirroring will automatically switch to a full-screen AirPlay experience on your HDTV.

Encrypted streaming
AirPlay Mirroring uses encryption to securely send what’s on your Mac to your Apple TV.

Audio support
With AirPlay Mirroring, audio from your Mac is wirelessly sent to your Apple TV. You can use this feature independent of AirPlay Mirroring by selecting your Apple TV in the Sound pane of System Preferences.

High performance
AirPlay Mirroring takes advantage of advanced hardware video encoding to deliver high-definition mirroring efficiently and optimize processor use.

Dictation

Talk anywhere you can type
OS X now supports Dictation. So wherever you can type, you can use your voice instead. Just select a text field and turn Dictation on. Use the keyboard shortcut — press the Function key twice — or choose Dictation from the Edit menu in any app. When you’re finished speaking, click Done. Dictation converts your words into text.

Works with any app
Dictation works with text fields in any OS X app — no additional third-party developer support is required.

Works with Contacts
Just say your friend’s name, and Dictation knows who you mean. It works with information in the Contacts app to recognize and spell names accurately, even if they have unusual spellings.

Keyboard shortcut
Press the Function key twice to start Dictation. Press it twice again when you’re done speaking.

No setup or training required
No setup or special training is required. Dictation just works. The more you use it, the better it understands you. Dictation learns the characteristics of your voice and adapts to your accent.

Works out of the box
Dictation uses the built-in microphone on your Mac, so it works as soon as you start speaking. You can also use an additional microphone.

Dictate commands
Dictation understands basic text-related commands such as “all caps,” “new paragraph,” and “new line.” When you say “period,” “comma,” “question mark,” or “exclamation point,” Dictation punctuates for you.

Languages
Dictation supports English (U.S., UK, and Australia), French, German, and Japanese. When your system is set to one of these languages, it automatically enters the right text.

Songza app streams tunes that suit your mood | iPhone Atlas - CNET Reviews

Songza app streams tunes that suit your mood | iPhone Atlas - CNET Reviews: I could build playlists for all these situations, but who's got time for that? What I need is a music concierge, someone who can put together a playlist based on any given activity: exercising, chilling out, working, and so on.
That's Songza (Android | iOS) in a nutshell. First previewed back in April, my new favorite app works like Pandora in that it streams music based on my personal preferences, but focuses on situations rather than individual songs and artists. And it's not only free, but also commercial-free. (Sorry, Pandora! I love you, I really do.)
Songza really is like your own personal music concierge. Based on the day of the week and time of day, it offers up six likely scenarios for what you're doing. For example, here on Monday evening, it asks if I want to play music for Evening Commute, Working Out, Unwinding After a Long Day, Cooking, and so on.
If I choose, say, Eating Dinner, I'm then presented with up to six genres, including Cool New Music, Acoustic & Folk, and Golden Oldies. Finally, I pick from one of three playlists. In the case of Golden Oldies, my choices are Classic Girl Groups, Doo-Wop, and Smooth Rockabilly.
Once you've drilled all the way down, you'll get a detailed description of the playlist, including some of the artists it contains, and a Play button. Music time!

An Explanation of the News From Apple - NYTimes.com

An Explanation of the News From Apple - NYTimes.com: On Monday morning in San Francisco, I watched the new Apple C.E.O., Tim Cook, give brief remarks at the beginning and the end of the keynote presentation at the Worldwide Developers Conference, which will apparently become what the old Macworld Expo used to be: a place for Apple to take the wraps off its latest inventions. He handed off the actual announcements to his lieutenants.

Mac Pro quietly gets first update since 2010 | Macworld: The Mac Pro update wasn’t mentioned during the WWDC keynote, but Apple updated the Mac Pro product page soon after the keynote concluded. Overall, the update to the Mac Pro is a relatively minor one—a speed bump and increases in RAM. Not only did the storage and video remain the same as in the previous models released in July 2010, but Apple didn’t see the Mac Pro fit for Thunderbolt, which is on every other Mac. The Mac Pro still uses USB 2.0 ports instead of USB 3.0, which made its debut in the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

Corning reveals astounding roll-up Willow glass for flexible displays (with video)

Corning reveals astounding roll-up Willow glass for flexible displays (with video): “Glass as thin and as flexible as a sheet of paper that can be printed on rolls just like a newspaper will be available to phone makers as soon as this month, said Dipak Chowdhury, head of Corning’s ultra-flexible thin-glass project Willow,” Jeremy A. Kaplan reports for Fox News. “‘It’s seriously built like paper,’ Chowdhury told FoxNews.com, ‘and behaves just like that.’”
“Ordinary displays in notebooks or smartphones are made of glass sandwiches, usually three sheets of the stuff measuring a bare 0.7 or 0.5 millimeters in thickness. At 0.1 millimeters thin, Corning’s brand new Willow glass is as thin as the finest human hair — and will makes those smartphone sandwiches as much as 7 times thinner,” Kaplan reports. “Glass isn’t inherently a rigid substance, Chowdhury explained. When it gets superthin, it becomes flexible just like any substance.”

Kaplan reports, “Willow Glass won’t immediately lead to roll-up iPhones, Poor was quick to note. The entire display industry is built for inflexible sheets of glass, made in massive, astronomically expensive plants. ‘It costs billions of dollars to build an LCD plant these days,’ Poor said.”

How to self-publish an ebook | Fully Equipped - CNET Reviews

How to self-publish an ebook | Fully Equipped - CNET Reviews: This is Amazon's e-book publishing platform and if you think you're going to sell a lot of e-books, you should figure out a way to upload your file (book) directly to KDP and avoid using any sort of middleman or e-book "aggregator" that takes a cut of the profits. If you're a true DIY person, you can create your own cover (though if you're not a professional designer, it's better to hire a pro) and format your e-book from a Word file using free software tools such as Mobipocket eBook Creator or Calibre. Mobipocket Creator allows you to create an e-book with a table of contents and convert it into Amazon's proprietary e-book format, AZW (MOBI, the file output by the program, is the same as AZW). You can start with a Word file, which then gets converted to HTML, then MOBI. (Check out the Mobipocket eBook Creator guide at the company's Web site).
